People travel from the neighboring districts of Thane, Raigad, and New Bombay to come all the way to Mumbai for their work and if one day it stops working, all these people do not have such cheap mode of transport.

From Mahim to KingsCircle to Wadala, and then it is the same journey as that of a normal harbor line train. The common stations for Western and central lines are Dadar, Parel and Matunga. This is also turning out to be one of the few zones where the maximum income is gained from people. Also the whole journey is very picturesque and very beautiful.

3) Rajdhani Express – Rajdhani were introduced with the sole purpose of connecting country capital and state capitals with each other. One of the prestigious trains, the facilities offered in the train are enough for people travelling in it once to come back again to get the same services. Though cost wise, this can be a bit expensive but the time taken by the Rajdhani is lesser than the other trains that ply on the same track. Rajdhani are one of the most sort after trains, for any route and you will always see the bookings as full for these trains.

As you know, Indian Railways started off in the year 1853 and since then has been growing in leaps and bounds. It reaches the most remote part of the country and for that there is a huge manpower required. Indian railways are probably the largest recruiter of people in India, with almost close to 1.5 million personnel working in it. This is not surprising as the requirement for people is always on the rise. One of the reasons, there has been no shortage of people willing to join the railways is because it is very secure, very satisfying and a recession proof. The growth prospects of the resources working in Indian railways are very high.

The process

Recruitment in Railways Indian railways are basically divided into different zones, and each of these zones has openings pertaining to its zone. The Zones are further divided into departments and divisions and each has specified technical and non technical roles available in each of their section. When we talk of technical requirements it would mean mechanical, civil, telecommunications or electrical engineers. While non technical roles mean more or less functional roles like accounts, HR & Personnel roles, finance related roles. They also require services for the defense forces called as the Railway protection force. The ranking of the railway personnel starts from Class D and the highest position is the class A personnel.


The recruitment for Class C and class D are generally through Railway Recruitment boards (RRB). The RRBs are again divided into 19 zones and their agenda to get the number of people to get the required essential for each of their Zones. This vacancy is open to most all the citizens of India; however they need to meet up with special qualifications and other mandatory requirements. The vacancies for these posts are generally put up in most of the leading newspapers in India. For Class B officers there is no general recruitment, they are generally promoted from smaller levels. However for the Class A employees there are extensive examinations conducted by the UPSC which stands for Union Public Service Commission.

The recruitment for jobs like Indian Railways Accounts service and the Indian Railway traffic service is conducted by the UPSC. The recruitment for engineers, Electrical engineers and Railways stores personnel are done with a combined Engineering service exam conducted by the railways. Apart from these there maximum recruitment comes through the special class Railway Apprentices exam which is conducted on an Annual basis.

The railways recruitment boards are set up in different Zones but the main task is to get the recruitments done and in a systematic and same process across Zones. The first exams that are done are generally written exam followed up by skill/aptitude exams. Once they are selected in all forms of exams/tests are then put into a process of background verifications where all the documents for of the candidate are checked upon. All the required documents like the academic certificates, Caste certificate if applicable are asked upon to the candidates. It is completely based on merit and happens in most of the zones when there is a need.

Shirdi is a place of worship for Saibaba and is located in Nashik. A six hours journey by road will take you to that place. People from far off places come to visit the temple. The one train that has caught the popularity of the pilgrims is the Sainagar-Shirdi-Dadar train; this leaves Mumbai at 9:45 pm and reaches Shirdi at 3:55 am in the night. This is run on Monday, Wednesday and Saturdays and the returns are scheduled for Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. So for those who don’t wish to miss the morning worship hours this is the ideal time. There are other trains too which take less time than these ones, though they may not touch Shirdi exactly. They reach the outskirts of Shirdi, and then pilgrims have to travel approximately 50 Kms more to reach Shirdi.

Railways as usual have been efficient in setting up these trains for pilgrims, and yes it has been a huge success.

Holiday Special: A Railway Advantage

Holidays are the times when you spend the maximum. This thought can be very well be understood by people who have family and wait for summer vacations to commence. The holiday time is also the time when the traffic at the Indian railways peak. These are also painful time for a passenger as getting tickets to the desired destination becomes a daunting task.

The reservation counters are always full and there are long queues to overcome, the tickets are booked when the day of booking starts and ends also on the same day. Availability of berths on the trains becomes almost impossible. People then start choosing different means of transport. To curb this, the railways came up with a brilliant plan of launching Holiday trains that cater only to the holiday seasons.

A Railway Advantage In India, there are three distinct holiday seasons the Diwali vacation, the Christmas vacation and the summer vacation. Summer vacation is the largest amongst all, runs from a span of April to June end, while Diwali and Christmas are during the festival time. There are other festivals too, but the kids don’t get holidays for more than couple of days. In this case, the holidays stretch from 2 months to 1 month to 10 days which is enough time for a holiday.

With such a long stretch of holidays it is almost advertent that the families will resort to holiday. The railways grabbed the opportunities with both hands and started holiday trains which ran during these peak season. For other trains the bookings need to be 90 days in advance but for these trains, the booking can be done a month prior or when the train launches. Every year a new list of holiday trains are launched.


The holiday trains almost all across the country, but the maximum holiday trains are generally for the southern railways, they are the ones who earn their maximum revenue by transporting people hence the number of trains to this side is also more. Most of the trains are Chennai bound or Kerala bound trains.

Few of the trains are Chennai Central Tirunelveli superfast special, Chennai central Tuticorin superfast special, and Tuticorin Chennai central special. Every Zone has their set of holiday special trains. Special trains run from Pune run to Solapur, Osmanabad, Agra-cantt, Ahmadabad, Gorakhpur, and Hazrat-Nizammudin. Trains from Hyderabad run to Dadar, Howrah, and Vishakhapatnam. These trains run once on a week or on daily basis.

These trains are not generally listed in IRCTC till the time they start off. They are available only during the time they are actually introduced and hence these tickets need not be booked 90 days before the date of travel. You will find lot of special trains during the Durga Puja time as well as during Ganesh Chaturthi festivals.

Southern Railways: A Railway Initiative

The uniqueness about this zone is that unlike most zones where the revenue is incurred maximum because of freight, here it is the travelling of people which rakes in the mullahs. The most profitable division under the Southern Railway zone are Chennai and Thiruvanthapuram, they get the maximum revenue.

The southern railways cater to the southern states and has a lot of development in terms of infrastructure, the facilities provided, the comfort provided. The profitable routes plying on the southern railways are Coimbatore to Thrissur to Ernakulam to Thiruvanthapuram, Chennai to Arrakonam to Katpadi to Salem to Erode to Coimbatore and Chennai to Villupuram to Tirichirapalli to Dindigul to Madurai to Tirunelveli to Nagercoil.
