Northeast Frontier Railway was formed essentially to better serve the requirements of travel and transportation of the northeastern states of India. Headquarters of Northeast Frontier is situated at Guwahati and it is serving various regions of Northeast Frontier Railway including parts of Bihar, parts of West Bengal and parts of North Eastern India .
Northeast Frontier Railway comprises of five divisional headquarters including Lumding, Alipurdaur, Tinsukia, Katihar and Rangiya. North Eastern Railway was created as the result of reorganization of the Indian Railways in the year 1952 by merging the Assam Railway with Avadh-Tirhut Railway. Northeast Frontier Railway was structured out of the North Eastern Railway in 1958 to better address the needs of Northeastern region.
Northeast Frontier Railway has completed momentous achievements since the time of its inception. Some of the noteworthy achievements of Northeast Frontier Railway includes Northeast Frontier Railway has successfully completed its track linking project in Agartala-Jogendranagar-Jirania-Brigudaspara and Katihar-Jogbani GC Project of Northeast Frontier Railway is also completed.
Additionally, Northeast Frontier Railway has successfully achieved various milestones like the Senchoa-Silghat GC project and the project of Siliguri Diesel Shed have been successfully completed. The project of sick line shed as well as freight examination facilities at New Bongaigao is also completed.
The region of Northeast Frontier Railways operations is marked by extraordinary beauty and simultaneously it presents some of the most difficult terrain. This complicated terrain restricts the rail network expansion in this region and Assam is the only state with a decent rail network.
The Northeast Frontier Railway network is not broad gauge in numerous parts and the rail lines are old-fashioned with speeds being restricted to a maximum of 30 km/h at some sections. Before the construction of the Saraighat Bridge, one had to descend on the Amingaon side of the Brahmaputra and use a ferry to Pandu Junction for resuming further journey.
